LUTHERSTADT WITTENBERG - LIFE IN THE COUNTRYSIDE

The Piesteritz housing estate was once home to more than a thousand people working in the former nitrogen plant. It was constructed by urban planner Georg Haberland and the architect Otto Rudolf Salvisberg in 1916 with the aim of creating a beautiful, uniform worker’s estate with a consistent level of architectural quality. During the Expo 2000, Piesteritz in Lutherstadt Wittenberg was restored to its original state, thus becoming the first car-free housing estate in Germany.

PIESTERITZ HOUSING ESTATE

The Piesteritz housing estate was once home to more than a thousand people working in the former nitrogen plant. It was constructed by urban planner Georg Haberland and the architect Otto Rudolf Salvisberg in 1916. The architects planned this estate as a garden town: every home had its own plot of land. The workers lived in small terraced houses which were positioned in a horseshoe formation around the town hall. During the Expo 2000, the estate in Lutherstadt Wittenberg was restored to its original state, thus become the first car-free housing estate in Germany.
